In July 2020, Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) partnered with National Wildlife Centre to provide 1-year veterinary internships at our facility North West of Calgary.
Founded in 1993, Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation is committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife. In 2009 the organization became an accredited veterinary clinic and had part-time veterinarians providing care to animals in need.
Through the partnership with National Wildlife Centre in 2020, AIWC is the first wildlife rehabilitation centre in Alberta to have a full-time veterinarian on staff. This has been instrumental to the progress of the wildlife rehabilitation program. Dr. Sherri Cox has been a wonderful support to not only the veterinary intern, but also to AIWC’s animal care team. All of our staff gain experience from this partnership and most importantly, the animals benefit.
By having a veterinarian on staff we are able to provide a high level of care to our patients and this has been instrumental in repairing wing fractures, helping animals recover from shock, and so much more.
Dr. Jessica Khodadad joined the AIWC team in July 2020 and her term will be coming to an end in early July 2021. She has been a tremendous asset to our team and we are forever grateful for the partnership with National Wildlife Centre. Dr. Khodadad will be helping to onboard our new veterinary intern, Dr. Emily Alnutt, and then headed to work in a facility in Texas! We wish you all the best, Dr. Jessica and welcome, Dr. Emily!
